🍼 Signs That Your Hamster Is Pregnant
How can you tell if your hamster is expecting babies? Look for these signs:
✅ Noticeably bigger belly, shaped like a pear 🍐
✅ Unstable walking, difficulty turning over
✅ Firm belly when touched
✅ Irritable behavior, easily gets annoyed 😠
✅ Starts fighting with male hamsters
✅ Visible nipples (double rows), preparing for nursing
🏡 How to Care for a Pregnant Hamster
A hamster's pregnancy lasts about 15-18 days (Syrian hamsters: 15-20 days, dwarf hamsters: up to 30 days). Here's what you need to do:
✔ Clean the cage thoroughly, remove the exercise wheel, and provide plenty of soft bedding 🛏
✔ Keep the cage in a quiet, well-ventilated, and dark area 🌙
✔ Feed high-protein and high-calcium foods: milk substitute, protein powder, cheese, boiled eggs, boiled meat, soy milk, dried fish, etc.
✔ Separate the male hamster—one hamster per cage is the golden rule⚠️
✔ Do not press on the pregnant hamster’s belly and try not to disturb her too much
👶 How to Care for a Hamster During Birth
When your hamster is giving birth, the number one rule is DO NOT DISTURB HER! 🚫
🐭 Do not touch the mother or the babies—this may stress her out and lead to baby rejection or even cannibalism 😨
🐭 Check food and water supply daily, and provide extra bedding
🐭 Never put the male back into the cage—he may attack the babies!
📌 Baby Hamster Development Timeline
✅ 7-10 days: Babies begin exploring the surroundings 🏠. Increase the amount of nutritional supplements like milk substitute to ease the mother's nursing burden
✅ 14 days: Babies open their eyes 👀 and can start eating some solid food. The mother is less likely to eat her babies at this stage, and you can lightly clean the cage
✅ 21 days: Babies are fully independent 💪 and can be separated from their mother
✅ 40+ days: Hamsters reach sexual maturity—separate them to prevent unwanted breeding!
