How to Recognize Heatstroke in Hamsters?

When the weather is hot and stuffy, humans sweat to regulate body temperature, but hamsters can’t do that because they don’t have sweat glands! 😱
When the temperature exceeds 28°C, hamsters become lethargic and have difficulty cooling down. If the temperature reaches over 30°C, the risk of heatstroke significantly increases, and it can even be fatal 💀. The ideal temperature for a hamster’s environment is between 20°C and 26°C.
What Are the Symptoms of Heatstroke in Hamsters?
-
Shaking Head While Walking:
Hamsters may shake their heads as they walk in an attempt to regulate their body temperature. -
Rapid Breathing and Lethargy:
Hamsters suffering from heatstroke will have labored breathing and appear very lethargic or unresponsive. -
Loss of Appetite and Eating Problems:
They may refuse to eat or have difficulty eating. -
Moist Body:
Their bodies may become damp due to excessive saliva production as a cooling mechanism. -
Lying on Their Back:
A hamster lying on its back and unable to stand could also be a sign of heatstroke.
What Should You Do If You Find Your Hamster Has Heatstroke Symptoms?
-
Offer Sports Drinks:
Dilute a sports drink to 1/2 or 1/3 of its original concentration and provide it to your hamster to help replenish lost electrolytes. -
Alcohol and Water Solution to Wipe Down:
Mix alcohol and water in a 1:1 ratio and gently wipe your hamster’s neck and belly until its temperature drops. -
Use Fans to Cool the Environment:
After lowering the room temperature, use a fan or a hand fan to help cool your hamster down. Be sure to control the wind strength and distance to avoid excessive dryness.
⚠️ Caution: While cooling down your hamster, make sure to keep them warm enough to avoid rapid temperature changes, which could cause other health issues. If heatstroke symptoms persist, take your hamster to the vet immediately to avoid further complications!
